What's with all the focus on Sports and Celebrities?

What the heck is the matter with the news media that we spend so much time on things like sports and celebrities? Folks, North Korea claims to have nuclear weapons, while the resident crazies in the Middle East are busy building the capability to refine nuclear material into weapons grade plutonium. But us here in the states we’re preoccupied on what everyone’s wearing or how our beloved sports teams are doing.

Or how about how the continued national debt throughout both democrat and republican regimes? Or that far from being the richest nation on earth, but are really the biggest debtor nation on earth. How about what this might mean and how will it affect me, you may say?
Take a look at the recent history of many South American countries. Look at the inflation rates and value of currency. The REALITY is that the only reason why we’re not in a depression with valueless money is that the Far Eastern nations like China are propping up our dollar.
Don’t think that we’re America and we’re to big to fail. That’s just what the Asian Tiger, Japan just a decade ago said. They’ve been living with some serious financial problems for well over 10 years. But don’t worry. Our newspapers and television media won’t let any of this reality interrupt your daily pabulum of sports and celebrity worship.

There are those who claim that because we can’t do anything about Korea or the Middle East that we should just enjoy our sports and celebrity shows. This is just like the end of the Roman Empire era when the government put on circuses in the coliseum to keep the sheeples mind off what was really happening. Christians were hated and fed to lions for entertainment while the stench of a rotting society continued unabated.

I personally don’t mind either sports or celebrities but how about a little thing called BALANCE! Enjoy it while you can because it won’t last.

Hey folks, another blog has hit the airwaves!

I know that you don't want to hear my opinion all the time and maybe want to see what the rest of the world thinks is reality.

Home Security Tips while on Vacation

You’re all packed up and ready to go and enjoy that well deserved vacation. Hopefully, the house and all your valuables will be here when you return. Fact is, there are burglars and other people intent on finding houses just like yours that are unwatched and unguarded. These homes without any home security systems are perfect for any burglar. No rush to get into or out of the house because no one is there to surprise them. Without spending the vacation budget for a security system, here are a few ideas to help keep your home safe.

Simply put, do anything that may suggest that the house is occupied. This would include having the lawn cut while your away or setting the sprinklers to go on.

Have the mail stopped or picked up by a neighbor. Nothing says “no one home” than a mailbox stuffed full of third class or junk mail!

Have the newspaper and any milk delivery stopped. What do you think when passing a home with 6 or 8 newspapers collecting at the end of the driveway. The burglar thinks the same thing! By the way, why aren’t you reading the news online? After all, this is the 21st century. :)

Consider getting a timer for several lights in the home. By having lights turn off and on at different times suggests that someone is in the house. For about 10-15 dollars each, you can get these simple timers at any hardware store. For more money, drapery motors can be installed to open and close window coverings at specifie times.

Get a barking dog motion detector. These bark when hit by an opening door.

Put sticks in the tracks of all windows to make it more difficult to open. You can cut these to length if letting in some fresh air is important to you.

Unplug the garage door opener. With a little time, someone with a radio transmitter and a laptop computer can input many key sequences into a file and try them out. Although many of the newer garage door openers have more advanced security features, the older ones do not.

Use Shipping Envelopes to Send Valuables Home from Vacation

Sending stuff back from vacation can be a nightmare especially if shipping from out of the country. International shipping is filled with many gotcha’s that if not recognized will hold or even return your package to the country of origin.

When buying legally obtained products overseas, packing the products correctly will ensure they arrive home in safe condition. Packing can be as simple as an oversized plastic type envelope for small unbreakable to larger double walled boxes with packing peanuts. If you have a choice, let the store where the treasure was bought take care of the paperwork and packing to get your new trinket home. They have the experience and knowledge to pack your purchase and get it to you in good condition whether a coo-coo clock or expensive perfume.

The plastic type envelopes used by the overnight carriers are ideal for those delicate fabrics that won’t break. A good example would be those beautiful silk scarves that were such a bargain that you bought 10! Instead of taking a chance on getting snags from being packed in your luggage, stuff them into a large envelop and mail them to yourself back home. They arrive in great condition and it’s something to actually look forward to when the mail arrives.

When shipping something of any size, a double strength cardboard box is the ticket. Double strength supports the extra weight and protects your valuables from the transit monkeys that always seem to know what is expensive to throw around J

Project Management, a different Perspective

Women were the original creators of multitasking before us guys gave it a fancy name and started charging money for it. Women has always worked to take care of kids, family responsibilities, food preparation, cleaning and a myriad of other things necessary to make a typical household run. So it’s only natural when family vacations are mentioned I think project management and by inference, my initial thoughts are to women.

Vacations are something that need good project management. If you think about it, there’s planning, financial considerations, transportation, delivery of the “experience” support needs like food and clothing, final preparations, and project launch all the while keeping everyone happy and healthy. So the key to a good vacation is proper planning and preparation or project management!

So even though it’s just a vacation, getting ready involved such details as lists and organizational management skills that women have done for ages. Project Management is simply what women through the ages have done to keep our society moving. So in a business or private situation, think project management and think mom!
Thanks mom.

Are US Call Centers Hurt by Online Banking?

Americans have become more comfortable with point-and-click banking over the last decade as they did with ATM tellers over 20 years ago. Although it’s estimated that about 50% of the people are still concerned about online banking and privacy, this is expected to continue to decline as younger customers reach prime banking age. This is creating a change in thinking at the typical corporate bank call center.

Although the same issues about personal privacy and security continue to be raised, the banking industry has a vested interest in moving the customer base over to web based banking. Many people are moving to direct “chat based” help live help instead of reaching for the telephone and making that call into a call center.

As online banking has gained in popularity due in part to faster web connections, banks have stepped up their efforts to feature the convenience and speed of internet banking services to manage your accounts. The reason is that online customers are cheap by comparison to the typical “visit the bank” type customer. Online customers use fewer resources and make fewer calls to corporate call centers.

Taking care of your eyes in the hot sun of summer

One of the most frequent complaints in the summer months is with the sun glare. If you’re planning to spend any time in the sum this summer, be certain that you take along a good pair of UV sunglasses. Ultraviolet sunglasses can protect your eyes from sun glare. The heat and glare of the afternoon sun will make your even more tired and unable to continue activities into the night.

Protecting your eyes is important especially if you’re going to other areas where the sun is hotter. The Caribbean is much closer to the equator and the sun thereby increasing the potential damage sun glare can cause. It’s simply not enough to assume that your eyes can be protected by contact lenses or cheaper sunglasses. You only have one pair of eyes so make sure to take care of them

What happens when your computer takes a holiday?

Computers have become so commonplace that it’s easy to take them for granted. With the advent of a plethora of programs, computers have become the data center for our homes. But what happens when that important piece of equipment goes haywire? If the problem is the result of a hard disk drive failure the impact on the ebb and flow of daily living is greatly impacted. The hard disk drive is by far the most complex mechanical system in your computer. It relies not only on electronic technologies but also electromechanical movements along with other high tech wizardry. It’s the mechanical actions however that make the hard drive much more prone to failure over other electrical components in your system

Depending on plans made before your hard drive fails will determine how difficult and expensive it will be to regain your information stored on the drive. Hard disk data recovery is typically the most expensive option. A simple backup made every week or so of your data on the hard disk is the cheapest and easiest way to maintain your computer. Remember that it’s really only a matter of time until your hard drive, with all those priceless pictures and information fails taking all your memories with it. It’s not IF it will happen only WHEN so be prepared.

Getting good deals

Believe it or not, getting good deals is NOT about the cheapest price. Although most of us think what we want is cheap, what we really want is value! The problem though is that we can’t put a price on value until we own or use something awhile. Price on the other hand stares us in the face everytime we go to buy something. Personally, the thought of having to buy something has become a drain due to the quality of products today. I get Anxious and dread the thought of the potential problems caused by getting yet another product that will not live up to the hype

So what makes a good value? Service, support, cleanliness of the people providing a service, thing that actually work and work well along with price.

While price may be the biggest determining factor for many purchases, the fact is that consumers are getting tired of getting junk products. How many VHS recorders have you purchased recently? If you are like many of us, the darn things only last about a year of so. Of course, they’ve become so cheap that maybe buying one every year is ok.

We see this in the computer industry a lot. Things like CD-Rom players and even power supplies that once were good for 5 yeas or so are now going out every couple of years. Is this a good thing? Well, depending on your need to have the latest and greatest products the answer could be yes. For many of us though, we just want our purchases to work. I don’t care if the product has a warranty. It’s still a hassle for me to remove the product from the computer (or entertainment center) find a packing box, ship it to the company, wait the 4-8 weeks and do without my product during that time.

Give me a good quality product that works the long term anytime over just a cheaper price.

Car Rental Companies are also Used Car Salesmen

Car Rentals has become a very competitive game with major players all trying to gain our business. Although it appears they are in the renal car business, many are also in the used car market, providing late model cars for the car buying public.
With this in mind, many rental car companies purchase cars with the most preferred options installed, making the future sale of the cars that much easier. This is why many automobiles in the renal fleets have power windows, seats and air conditioning. These are the minimum acceptable configurations or options that the car buying public will accept. Without these basic “luxury” items, the autos will be much more difficult to sell at a later time
